A New Year: A New Resolve:
A Big Thank You to All Kid Power Supporters in 2012.
Today, on New Year’s Day, I speak for all Kid Power’s tireless staff who dedicate themselves to ensuring a better future for today’s children. Today, I share with you our deep resolve and perseverance to continue to advocate for our nation’s young people.
In this New Year, times are uncertain. Budgets will be cut. We know that youth in DC will not have all the resources they deserve or need to succeed.
We assure you that our team is more resolved more than ever in our efforts to help young people in the District grow into healthy, caring, and productive adults. We are steadfast in our belief that young people possess immense compassion, creativity, and fortitude. We remain devoted to continually developing our programs and working with families to help Kid Power youth use these innate traits to change their lives and change the world.
And, we are deepened in our resolve to stop senseless violence and give young people the tools and support they need to become peacemakers and community builders. Last semester, Kid Power students devoted over 1,000 hours to helping their community. They raised over $1,000 to help victims of Super storm Sandy and $200 to help children with severe illness at Children’s National Medical Center. They wrote letters to City Council about violence in their community and pollution in their parks. They wrote cards to sick children and the elderly. They created PSAs to encourage their peers to use less electricity and to eat healthier. And they dreamed big. Students at LAMB Elementary School spent a semester learning about educational rights across the world and advocated for access to better education. They raised $600 for scholarships for girls in Benin! Finally, they worked to ensure healthier lies for themselves and their communities. They spent over 1,000 hours in their community gardens and hosted several community wellness events.
Kid Power believes that by giving young people the educational tools, emotional support, and opportunities to create positive change, we are providing a powerful venue for youth leadership. Kid Power helps young people become strong and creative learners and agents of positive social change.
On New Year’s Day, we resolve to renew our efforts to ensure that young people have safe and healthy environments to learn, grow, and make positive changes in themselves and in their communities.
If you were unable to donate an end of the year-donation, please consider making a small donation to help us continue our momentum into the New Year. Every donation matters. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
On behalf of Kid Power students, families, staff, and Board of Directors, I wish you a positive, healthy, and peaceful New Year! Thank you again to all of our supporters. You are all truly amazing!
Andria Hollis, Executive Director
