Kid Power and Fuel Pizza are thrilled to announce the launch of the celebrated Field to Fuel program in Washington, DC. The goal of the program is to inspire a long-term love of vegetables in children, using pizza as a medium. Fuel Pizza is partnering with Kid Power, a local non-profit that builds gardens in DC schools. With this program, they will assist public schools in planting a school garden, then treat the students to a field trip to Fuel where the kids will learn to use the vegetables by making whole wheat vegetable pizzas including the produce they grew. Kid Power and Fuel Pizza will work together to teach kids about the science behind growing their own food. The hope is to inspire healthier eating for future generations.

“We take a food that kids love, pizza, and use it to get them to eat foods they don’t love, vegetables,” says Fuel Pizza co-owner Paula SeefeldtOur Field to Fuel program has been very successful in North Carolina and we are really excited to bring it to DC. Field to Fuel follows similar ideals to Michelle Obama’s work with children in the White House garden and it is so wonderful to see our program launching now in the Nation’s Capital.”

Kid Power DC is a civics-based organization that provides academic, artistic, nutritional, and service-learning opportunities for youth in underserved neighborhoods in DC. Through their various youth programs they serve nearly 300 public elementary and middle school students throughout the District of Columbia. Included in Kid Power DC’s programming is VeggieTime, where students have the opportunity to study food issues and environmental sciences, operate citywide urban gardens, sell produce and prepared foods at markets and restaurants, and use the profits to support home and community service projects focused on nutrition.
