Dear Friend,

Recapping a Summer of Learning, Innovation, and Recreation

“My favorite things so far at camp have been learning about films and VeggieTime where we made hummus and got to be active. Tasia

“I feel more prepared to go back to school.” Marcus

“I learned how to set goals for myself in order to track my progress.” — Sidney

What an amazing summer we had at the 2015 Summer Leadership Academy! Over 225 elementary and middle school students participated in daily math, reading, gardening, cooking, and service activities.

Hands-On Academics: Students wrote, filmed and edited their own short films to practice literary concepts, such as story arcs and character development and participated in hands-on engineering lessons by learning about different types of bridges and then building their own model bridges after conducting weight experiments with weights and scales.

A huge thanks to the volunteers from Deloitte and Hanover Research who built our outdoor kitchen!

The Hot Sauce Challenge: Middle School students completed the Hot Sauce Challenge by successfully launching their own hot sauce businesses using peppers from their gardens! Papa Tang’s, Infurious Sweet, and Shock Wave teams competed for Best Taste and Most Sales. Students donated half of their profits, just over $300, to charities of their choosing (ASPCA, Susan G. Komen, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital).

Family Harvest Dinner: To celebrate students’ hard work and showcase their newly acquired skills, Kid Power hosted a Family Harvest Dinner for over 300 students and their families. The evening featured student performances and awards, final presentations on the hot sauce challenge, and a delicious and nutritious dinner prepared and served by students!
