11th Annual Taste of the Garden is Back
with a New Delicious Twist!

On April 25th, 2024, experience an evening full of community celebration, guest speakers, philanthropic and advocacy awardees, live cooking demos, and much more. The Taste of the Garden brings together industry experts, youth advocates, local partners, and community members. At the heart of the event is our partnership with Kid Power students, who will join renowned chefs, Food Educator Chef JojoResident Chef Embassy of Haiti and Former White House Chef Sebastien Salomon, and Food Ambassador and Executive Chef Kaimana Chee, in electrifying cooking showcases. Witness the magic of collaboration and creativity as they whip up culinary delights before your eyes.

 

This year, we are honored to present the 2024 Excellence in Leadership Award to the remarkable Mrs. Shawn Yancy, a philanthropist, EMMY Award winner, tireless community advocate, and esteemed Washington News Anchor. In addition, we will also shine a spotlight on a local hero with the 2024 Community Hero Award, recognizing their unwavering dedication to uplifting our community.

 

Join us as we recognize and celebrate the outstanding efforts of those who positively impact our community and youth. Let’s honor their efforts and inspire one another to continue creating positive change. So let’s get ready to Sip, Savor, and Stroll with special guests: Musican Emma G, Master Sommelier Nadine Brown, and Author Maryah Greene. This event includes chef demonstrations, guest speakers, wine tasting, heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle.

Calling all OSSE DOT Families: Monthly Parent Stipend Program Application due March 15! 🚨

The DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education, @osse.dc, is launching a new program to provide a monthly payment to eligible parents or guardians that choose to opt out of OSSE-DOT provided vehicle or bus and self-transport their student to and from school. This also includes drop off and pick up for special services the student receives that are related to their education. Eligible families who are approved to participate in the program will receive $400 per month to support self-transportation of students. For info & to apply:

Kid Power’s most recent Family Engagement Night was a success!! Led by Instructional Coach Brittany and Program Manager, Erin, students connected to explore a range of activities, including promoting healthy eating habits through a make-your-own yogurt station, discussing conflict resolution during “KP Circles”, and exploring their interests through a “When I Grow up, I want to be…” exercise. Our next Family Engagement nights will be held at @stanton_dcps @jowilsoncardinals @garrisonelementaryschool.

Tanya Morant has been a member of Kid Power’s Board of Directors since 2022. In reflecting on her most rewarding experiences with Kid Power, Tanya states, “Ever since I learned about Kid Power as a donor several years ago, I have been impressed with how intentional the organization is about every action it takes. As we continue to celebrate incredible partners, community members, and staff this February, we would like to spotlight Erin. Erin serves as the Program Manager for our After-School Program. When asked about her favorite experience with Kid Power, Erin stated, “My favorite experience is spending time with our students. They are so funny, charismatic, and smart. The Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Employment Program (MBSYEP) is a six-week program that provides District youth ages 14 to 24 with enriching and constructive summer work experiences through placements in public and private sectors.
Through MBSYEP, participants will have the opportunity to:

• Earn money and gain practical work experience
• Learn and develop skills, attitudes, and competencies necessary to success in today’s work environment.
• Gain exposure to various career industries.
• Interact with professionals in the workforce.
