Dear Friend,

Are you setting your new goals for yourself in 2015? So are we! With the New Year, Kid Power students and staff alike are ready to take on new challenges and continue to move the goal posts in achieving academic, civic, and healthy living goals.

Kid Power students wasted no time in getting back to their studies in 2015, and have begun to set specific goals for the spring semester, including:

  • Master my multiplication tables
  • Try 5 new vegetables this semester
  • Go an entire week with no behavior marks in the Red Zone (all greens!)
  • Help my mom make dinner with veggies from my garden

Meanwhile, Kid Power’s senior staff completed their annual winter retreat to reflect on what we hope to bring to these ambitious students in 2015. Here are a few of our resolutions:

  • Increase volunteer recruitment efforts to ensure that each student has a one-on-one mentor
  • Expand youth advocacy opportunities and provide students with the chance to dialogue with City Council members during DC budget season this spring
  • Increase opportunities for parent engagement in our spring service projects
  • Create more benchmark tests for youth through innovative review games to better ensure they retain important lessons throughout the year

MLK Day of Service

mlk2005_noline.jpgDr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 19th 50 Kid Power students will rise to Dr. King's call to action and they could use your help! Students, families, and community members will be preparing and distributing over 300 healthy meals to people experiencing homelessness in our community.

We are accepting monetary and in-kind donations of water, fruit, bread, sandwich meats, and cheeses to support this exciting event. Please email Nani Swaminathan at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more details on making a donation.

Looking Forward

From a growing staff and student population to a variety of new services to youth (robotics, fitness classes, and rowing to name a few!), Kid Power had one of its most exciting years ever in 2014. And we could not have done it without your support.

In 2015, we are aiming even higher to meet the needs of DC youth and help them on their journey to become productive and healthy adults. We sincerely thank you for joining us in this journey, and we look forward to sharing our progress along the way.
