Dear Friend,

As we gear up to kick off the 2015 Summer Leadership Academy in less than 2 weeks, we want to share a few of the highlights from Kid Power’s action packed spring semester with you.

Community Health & Academic Fair at Barnard Elementary:

KP2.BES-19.jpgOver 200 students and parents stamped their “Passport to Health” by participating in each of the fitness, gardening, healthy eating, medical, and academic activities and games at the Kid Power and Barnard Elementary Health and Academic Fair in May! Youth and families celebrated community health as they enjoyed zumba classes, fun runs, garden tours, potting lessons, smoothie making, mental and dental health stations, and more!

A big thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate and support healthy living in the District, especially our partners and volunteers from Grant Thornton, FUEL Pizza, and the DC Fire & EMS Department!

Farm to FUEL:

As part of Kid Power’s “Farm to FUEL” partnership with FUEL Pizza, students from Jefferson and Sousa Middle Schools had a blast on their annual field trips to FUEL to make their own personal pizzas using fresh produce from their gardens! These opportunities are crucial to help youth fully understand how they can apply their VeggieTime health and nutrition knowledge to their lives outside the classroom. We’re so grateful for our generous partners at FUEL who continue to share their space, expertise, and, of course, pizza with us!

Family Engagement & Feedback:

This year, we had record turnout at our quarterly family cooking nights (over 300 attendees!) and a significant increase in parent volunteer hours! We're so grateful for parents’ commitment to Kid Power programs and we believe that family engagement is critical to fostering long-term impact for all youth participants. We also believe that parent feedback is instrumental to ensuring that our programs accomplish their goals, which is why we collect parent satisfaction surveys at the end of each year. Here are a few of our favorite responses from this year:

-Is there anything you have noticed in your child that has changed since participating in Kid Power?

“He is reading well, better than ever now, and I'll like to thank you all for that.”

-What is the best thing about having your child in Kid Power?

“A lot more calm especially when in conflict situations.”

-Is there anything you disliked about the Kid Power program? Or do you have any suggestions for us moving forward?

“I now have to limit my cookie intake and eat more fruit... setting a good example for my TREASURE!!”

A huge thank you to our families for their feedback, their enthusiastic participation in family events, and their commitment to Kid Power!
